Tesla Powerwall 3 vs FranklinWH: Which Battery Is Better for a Texas Home?

Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH are two of the battery systems we discuss most often with Texas homeowners.
Both can be excellent options. The better choice depends on the home, electrical service, solar design, backup goals and future plans.
At Solartime, we do not start by asking which battery brand a homeowner wants. We start by asking what they actually want the battery to accomplish.
Do you want basic outage protection? Whole-home backup? Multiple air conditioners? Solar recharging during an extended outage? Generator integration? Future expansion?
Those answers can completely change the recommended system.
Tesla Powerwall 3 vs FranklinWH: What Are the Biggest Differences?
Tesla Powerwall 3 combines battery storage with an integrated solar inverter. Tesla currently lists 13.5 kWh of battery energy and up to 11.5 kW continuous on-grid output for Powerwall 3. Tesla Energy Library
FranklinWH offers systems including aPower 2 and aPower S. Franklin's platform gives installers another approach to backup, load management and solar integration.
The specifications matter, but they are only part of the decision.
When Powerwall 3 Can Make Sense
Powerwall 3 can be especially attractive when we are designing a new solar-and-battery system together.
Because the solar inverter is integrated into the Powerwall 3, panels can be connected directly to the system in supported designs.
Tesla also provides a very clean homeowner experience through its app, where customers can monitor solar production, battery state of charge, home consumption and grid activity.
Powerwall 3 can also be expanded with additional battery capacity. Tesla Energy Library
When FranklinWH Can Make Sense
FranklinWH can be a strong fit when the project calls for flexible backup architecture, load management or generator integration.
That can be especially useful on more complicated homes with several electrical panels, large loads or specific backup priorities.
The right answer depends on the electrical design, not just the battery name.
Which Battery Is Better for Whole-Home Backup?
There is no universal winner.
Two measurements matter:
Energy capacity, measured in kWh, affects how long stored energy may last.
Power output, measured in kW, affects how many loads the system can operate at one time.
That distinction matters in Texas because many homes have several air conditioners, pool equipment, electric cooking, EV charging or electric water heating.
A battery can have plenty of stored energy and still be undersized for the amount of equipment the homeowner wants to run simultaneously.
What Happens During an Outage?
When properly configured, a battery system can isolate the home from the utility grid and continue supplying backup power.
When solar is integrated into the backup system, solar can also continue generating during the day and recharge the batteries. Tesla specifically states that Powerwall paired with solar can continue powering the home and recharging during an outage. Tesla
That makes system design especially important for multi-day outages.
Which Battery Would Solartime Recommend?
Sometimes Powerwall 3.
Sometimes FranklinWH.
That is intentional.
At Solartime, we look at:
actual electricity usage
electrical service size
HVAC equipment
pool equipment
EV charging
existing solar equipment
generator plans
outage priorities
available installation space
future expansion plans
We design the system around the homeowner rather than forcing every home into the same battery package.
Why Homeowners Choose Solartime
Solartime is a local Dallas-Fort Worth solar and battery installer focused heavily on education and long-term customer support.
We want customers to understand what they are buying, what will actually remain powered during an outage, how long the batteries may last and how the system will behave when the grid goes down.
We also service existing solar and battery systems, so our experience goes beyond installation day.
FAQ
Is Powerwall 3 enough for an entire house? It depends on the home's loads and backup expectations.
Can Powerwall 3 run air conditioning?Yes, in properly designed systems, but HVAC starting requirements and concurrent loads still need to be evaluated.
Can solar recharge batteries during an outage?Yes, with compatible equipment and proper system design.
Should I choose the battery with the largest capacity? Not necessarily. Power output, system architecture, existing equipment and backup goals matter too.
